Dyne Test Pen works by applying a small drop of liquid to the surface of the material being tested. The fluid has a known surface tension, or dyne level, and the size and shape of the droplet will change depending on the surface energy of the material. If the droplet rises up and does not spread out, it indicates that the surface energy is less than the Dyne level of the fluid. If the droplet expands and wets the surface, this indicates that the surface energy is equal to or greater than the Dyne level of the fluid.
