Modern tennis, as we know it today, began to take shape in the late 19th century in England. Major Walter Clopton Wingfield is credited with popularizing the game. In 1873, he introduced a version of tennis called "Sphairistikè," which was played on a grass court. This form of the game quickly gained popularity among the British upper class.
