Badminton's roots can be traced to ancient civilizations in Greece, China, and India, where shuttlecock games were played. The modern version of the sport began to take shape in India during British colonial rule. British officers stationed in India were introduced to a game called Poona and brought it back to England. The game was named after Badminton House, the Duke of Beaufort's estate, where it was first played in its modern form in the 1870s.
